GEORGE W. TAYLOR
(1808-1862) Union brigadier general of the First New Jersey Brigade, seeing action at First Bull Run and the Seven Days Battles, only to be mortally wounded by a shell at Manassas Station. Very rare signature ‘Geo. W. Taylor' in black ink on the verso of a war-date document, 1p. 8vo., Oct. 22, 1861, a circular issued by commanding general Philip Kearny to his subordinate colonels, requesting that they furnish axemen to work on fortifications, penned by and signed at the conclusion by Kearny's adjutant. The verso bears Taylor's signature, presumably an endorsement acknowledging the order, adding his contemporary rank "Col 3d Regt'. It is accompanied by the signatures of three other officers, including JAMES H. SIMPSON (1813-1883), commanding colonel of the 4th New Jersey. Shows original mailing folds, with a few spots of soiling and negligible archival tape marks to the recto, otherwise in very good condition.
