Book Details: This paperback volume contains the Civil War journal of Catholic priest Rev. H. Clavreul and details his experiences ministering to the sick and dying in a Georgia prison camp in July and August of 1864.

Clavreul describes in gruesome detail the horrors the prisoners faced and his attempts to give them some comfort during their final hours. Were it not for the detailed lists Clavreul records in this narrative we certainly would have long since lost the names of these soldiers to history.

This volume was published after George Robbins, a member of the Connecticut Association of Ex-Prisoner's of War, learned that a priest had kept a record of the dead from the prison camps in Andersonville and Savannah, Georgia. Attempting to reconcile families whose loved ones did not return from the war as well as surviving soldiers who wondered about their comrades, Robbins entreated Clavreul to allow him to publish this narrative along with its list of the deceased. The text of this volume does not deal with the politics of the Civil War but instead is the story of a priest's attempts to bring comfort to those in desperate circumstances and retain their names for posterity.
