G. F. Signed, Engraved, Silver Inlaid, and Incise Carved Flintlock Golden Age Southern Long Rifle The top of the barrel is signed with "G=F" in script. This resembles markings found on other George Washington Fisher Sr. rifles. He was active in Shenandoah County, Virginia, in the early 19th century likely through the Civil War era and until his death in 1869. His son of the same name was also a gunsmith. The gunmakers of Virginia were largely descended from German migrants from Pennsylvania. The patch box, silver wedge escutcheons for the rear wedge only, side plate, stock profile, thumb plate, hunter's star cheekpiece inlay, and much of the stock carving closely matches the Fisher rifle on page 98 of "Gunsmiths of Virginia" by Whisker. The rifle has the standard low profile blade and notch sights found on most Kentucky rifles, a plain trigger, and a Ketland & Co. lock. Manufacturer: Kentucky Model: Flintlock BBL: 43 5/8 inch octagon Stock: maple Gauge: 48 Finish: brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Fair. The barrel has been slightly shortened at the muzzle is an artificial dark brown with moderate flash pitting/erosion at the breech and generally minor oxidation and pitting elsewhere. The lock has a similar dark brown appearance, faint markings, and mild oxidation and pitting. It works but does not have a functional halfcock notch. The brass and silver have aged patina and fairly crisp engraving. The rear tip of the toe plate is absent. The lengthened, refinished stock is also fair and has a crude repair above the nose of the lock plate, several small cracks in the forend, and partially smoothed carving.
