GABRIEL C. WHARTON
(1824-1906) Confederate brigade general who commanded troops in the Shenandoah Valley, principally at New Market and Waynesboro. A.E.S. on a very interesting war-date manuscript D.S., 1p. folio, Glade Spring, VA, June 11, 1863, an affidavit signed by British subject Martin Conner, stating that he is willing to serve as a substitute in the Confederate Army, with the commanding lieutenant colonel of the 30th Virginia Battalion and the brigade surgeon countersigning, affirming that Conner is able-bodied. The verso is again endorsed by the commanding officer, below which appears Wharton's endorsement, ‘Approved & Respectfully forwarded', signed ‘G. C. Wharton' with his contemporary rank ‘Col. Comg. 3 Brg.' The final endorsement, executed by an adjutant by order of Maj. Gen. Samuel Jones, disapproves Conner's acceptance as a substitute, as ‘unnaturalized foreigners' are expressly forbidden by general orders to serve as such. Shows expected folds, evenly toned, and slightly ragged at the right edge, otherwise in very good condition overall.
