FRIDA KAHLO (1907-1954), ATTRIBUTED TO, OIL ON CANVAS

Dimensions:

Image size: 79.8 x 60.3 cm. All measured values are approximate.

Provenance and Authenticity:

This painting is presented in the manner and style associated with Frida Kahlo, one of the most influential Mexican artists of the twentieth century. The work reflects the artist's well-known approach to self-portraiture, combining personal symbolism, indigenous Mexican visual traditions, and intimate representations of identity and nature. Executed in oil on canvas and presented in a decorative period-style frame, the composition displays characteristics associated with Kahlo's portrait works, including a frontal figure, symbolic elements, and a highly detailed botanical setting.

Signature:

Frida Kahlo

Description:

The composition depicts a self-portrait of a woman positioned against a lush natural background, wearing traditional-style clothing and adorned with floral elements in her hair. A small monkey appears beside the figure, a recurring symbolic motif in Frida Kahlo's paintings often associated with companionship, protection, and emotional connection. The carefully rendered facial features, direct gaze, and detailed vegetation create a powerful sense of presence, while the contrast between the figure's white clothing and the surrounding green foliage emphasizes the central subject. The work reflects Kahlo's distinctive fusion of realism, symbolism, and personal narrative.

Historical significance:

Frida Kahlo's self-portraits represent one of the most recognizable bodies of work in modern art, exploring themes of identity, heritage, personal experience, and human emotion. Her incorporation of Mexican cultural imagery, animals, plants, and symbolic references established a unique artistic language that continues to influence contemporary artists worldwide. Portraits inspired by her iconic compositions remain highly sought after among collectors of twentieth-century and Latin American art.

Valuation:

Works associated with Frida Kahlo occupy an important position in the international art market due to her exceptional cultural influence and distinctive visual language. Portraits featuring her characteristic symbolism, traditional clothing, and botanical motifs are especially significant within her broader artistic legacy. The combination of recognizable imagery, strong historical association, and collector interest contributes to the enduring appeal of works attributed to Kahlo.
