  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Frederick Leo Hunter (1858–1943) was an American artist best known for his street scenes and etchings of New York City, as well as coastal marine views along both sides of the Long Island Sound. He lived at Ossining and Cold Spring on Hudson, New York, and exhibited at the National Academy of Design from 1881 to 1886, the Brooklyn Art Association from 1881 to 1886, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1881–82 and 1884. Hunter frequently depicted the bustling waterfront of Lower Manhattan, capturing the tall-masted sailing ships, warehouses, and piers along South Street during the late 19th century. His work is held in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which includes a closely related drawing of the same Wall Street subject dated 1881, as well as a companion view titled "The Old East India Wharf, South Street, New York, N.Y." from 1882.
