U.S. Frankford Arsenal/Remington Maynard Tape Primer Conversion Model 1816 Rifled Musket In 1856-1859, the Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia converted Model 1816 flintlock muskets to the Maynard tape percussion system using 20,000 locks and bolsters manufactured by Remington. They are known to have been issued to the U.S. Navy as early as 1857, the 6th U.S. Infantry at Fort Riley, Kansas, and several New York units. Though the Maynard system proved unreliable, many were used during the Civil War using traditional percussion caps. It has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, blade front sight on the front of the upper barrel band, long range notch and folding ladder rear sight, standard proof and inspection marks, "1857" and "C/4" on the barrel tang, "J.T." on the primer door, "REMINGTON'S/ILION N.Y./1857/U.S." on the tail of the lock, "JBK" on the trigger guard, "E[F?]" and "ER/3" cartouches on the left stock flat, "HJ" and an "JS" cartouche on the bottom just behind the trigger guard tang, and a trumpet head ramrod. Manufacturer: Remington Arms Inc Model: 1816/1857 Conversion BBL: 41 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 69 Finish: bright/brown Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good with mostly bright surfaces on the lock and barrel along with heavy pitting concentrated at the breech, 70% dark arsenal type brown finish on most of the remaining components, hairline crack in the otherwise fine stock at the tail of the lock, and scattered dings and scratches.
