Extraordinary Quality Relief Chiseled, Carved, Engraved, Silver and Gold Finished Flintlock Hunting Rifle by Andreas Haman of Ansbach This spectacular c. 1730s rifle is signed "ANDREAS HAMAN ANSPACH" in silver inlay on the top of the barrel and "ANDR HAMAN A ANSPACH" on the lower right beveled edge of the lock. The Haman family of gunmakers were active in present day Ansbach (formerly Anspach), Bavaria, Germany, in the first half of the 18th century. The blued, swamped, octagonal barrel has seven-groove rifling, a dovetailed blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight with decorative scroll finial, and a silver inlaid and engraved scene with the hunter Actaeon with stag antlers surrounded by his hounds from the tragedy of Diana and Actaeon. A similar Haman rifle is known with a scene of Diana in the same location suggesting they were made as a pair. The lock continues the theme with a relief chiseled scene of a stag being subdued by a pack of dogs, and the gilt mounts feature a variety of further hunting scenes, including Saint Hubertus and the stag on the patchbox lid. The wrist escutcheon features a pair of putti, a stand of arms, and a profile of a nobleman. The rifle is equipped with a single set trigger. The stock features a horn forend cap, fine molding, raised relief and incised scroll carving, sling swivels, and a large cheekpiece on the left. The buttplate has a "43" inventory number, likely from a royal hunting lodge or armory. The ramrod has a horn tip.
