A finely crafted Chinese hardwood hanging bird cage, executed in the traditional manner with exceptional carved detail throughout. The cylindrical cage is constructed with closely spaced hardwood bars rising from an elaborately carved and pierced base featuring high-relief dragons amidst scrolling clouds, symbolizing power, longevity, and prosperity in Chinese decorative arts. The exterior is ornamented with numerous carved hardwood figures representing scholars and immortals in flowing robes, each individually rendered and affixed around the circumference of the cage. The domed top terminates in an elegant carved suspension finial with original metal hanging hook. The interior retains two hand-painted porcelain water and feed cups decorated in famille rose enamels with figural and floral scenes, together with a carved hardwood perch and pierced decorative panels. Such cages were not merely functional objects but expressions of refinement, serving as prized possessions of Chinese gentlemen who gathered socially while displaying prized songbirds. The combination of finely carved hardwood, traditional figural decoration, porcelain accessories, and richly carved dragon base demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship associated with decorative Chinese bird cages produced during the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic period. Today these cages are highly sought after by collectors of Asian decorative arts for both their sculptural beauty and cultural significance. A handsome and decorative example suitable for display in collections of Chinese furniture, scholar's objects, or Asian decorative arts. Approximate dimensions: Height: approximately 18 inches (including hanging hook) Diameter: approximately 13 inches.

  • Circa: Late Qing Dynasty to Early Republic Period, circa 1890–1930.
  • Condition: Overall very good antique condition. The hardwood retains an attractive warm patina with expected age-related surface wear, minor rubbing, and scattered small losses consistent with careful use. The cage retains its carved hardwood figures, pierced ornament, carved dragon base, perch, and two porcelain feed/water cups. Metal hanging hook present. No bird included. Examination under natural light is recommended.
