GERMAN P.08 LUGER SEMI-AUTOMATIC PISTOL WITH HOLSTER & SPARE MAGAZINE. Cal. 9mm Luger. S# N1034. Bbl. 4". Immediately following World War II, many small arms were needed to arm the newly established German Communist authorities. World War II production small arms and replacement parts were used up until the early 1950s, at which time many of said stocks had been exhausted. Circa. 1952-1953 the decision was made to produced a small batch of numerous German small arms in order to replace or repair older arms. Approx. 120 small arms of each type (K98k, PP, P.38, and the P.08) were produced, each with a S# range of N1000 to approx. N1120. This example, a P.08 Luger mfg. by Ernst Thalmann showcases all the usual features of this variation, most notably the distinct rough machining, lack of mfg markings, casting of the trigger, as well as the lack of a stock lug. The underside of the bbl. is marked with a large Crown/N commercial nitro proof, followed by a diminutive West German Eagle/N nitro proof, both of which are repeated on the left side of the forward toggle link. Left side of the breechblock is marked with sole diminutive Eagle/N proof, with an additional standard size Eagle/N proof marked on the interior of the forward frame well. Underside of the bbl. extension is marked with a triad of West German proofs consisting of an Eagle/N, Munich proof house shield, and "90" within a shield (indicating year of importation), above an engraved "9mm Para". Metal components exhibit a salt blue finish overall, save for on the firing pin, firing pin spring guide, and ejector, which are polished in-the-white. Frame is mounted with 2-piece checkered mottled brown synthetic grips, each featuring a concentric circle towards the top of the panel. Dovetailed blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear sight. Bbl. extension "shelf" above the trigger bar plunger pin exhibits 2 holes for a police Schiwy safety, though one was never installed. All serialized parts are matching and include the frame, takedown lever, sideplate, bbl. extension, as well as the toggles. Remaining parts/components are unnumbered. MAGS: x1 proper blued steel mag. with aluminum plug. Left side of mag. body is marked "2/1001", with "1/ 1034" marked on the underside of the plug. x1 non-matching mag. with "2/1001" marked on the left and "2/ 6441" on the plug. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: x1 unmarked pigskin black leather holster containing a loading tool. CONDITION: fine, with metal components retaining bountiful amounts of their original factory blue finish, exhibiting some spots of light edge wear, as well as some light thinning that gently shows through to brown patina. Action functions properly, although the firing pin still drops when the safety lever is engaged (unsafe to fire until inspected by a professional gunsmith). Grips are very good, exhibiting some light smoothing, as well as some minor superficial handling marks overall. Holster remains malleable, exhibiting some mild wear, but otherwise remaining sturdy and serviceable. An especially attractive and scarce example of a P.08 variation many collectors are unfamiliar with! PROVENANCE: The Estate Collection of John Eckert. (26-1174/MLW). CURIO. $2,000-3,000.
