An impressive hand-worked brass ewer of Middle Eastern inspiration, executed with an elegant pear-shaped body, elongated neck, and gracefully curving spout. Richly engraved throughout, the vessel is adorned with floral and foliate motifs, geometric punchwork, and a prominent cartouche depicting a stylized mythological bird or phoenix rendered in traditional decorative form. The sculptural details include a dragon- or makara-form spout terminal opposed by a matching zoomorphic handle mount, while the domed hinged lid is surmounted by a finely cast seated mythological beast finial. The tall loop handle terminates in a decorative pierced flourish, complementing the dynamic silhouette of the vessel. Crafted entirely of polished brass with extensive hand engraving, the ewer reflects the enduring decorative traditions of Islamic and Middle Eastern metalwork. While inspired by historic Persian, Turkish, and Indo-Persian forms, pieces of this type were widely produced during the twentieth century as decorative works and functional serving vessels. An attractive and highly decorative example, suitable for display within collections of Islamic art, Middle Eastern metalwork, or eclectic traditional interiors.

  • Literature: Comparable examples of engraved brass ewers are illustrated in publications concerning Islamic and Middle Eastern decorative arts, particularly Persian, Turkish, and Indo-Persian metalwork traditions. This example appears to be a twentieth-century decorative interpretation of historic forms.
  • Circa: Mid to late 20th century.
  • Condition: Overall good vintage condition. Surface wear, light scratches, scattered oxidation, and areas of tarnish consistent with age and handling. Minor casting irregularities and small dents are present from manufacture and use. The hinged lid operates properly and remains attached. No significant structural damage observed.
