Fine Antique Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in Highly Desirable .45-70 Government Manufactured in 1892, this is a fine example of Winchester's Model 1886 rifle designed by John Moses Browning. The design for the '86 offered a significant advancement in strength of action for the Winchester lineup, and it was their first departure from the weaker toggle-link designs that had served them well for two decades. These 1886s, with their strong vertical locking lugs, were capable of handling some of the most powerful cartridges of the day, including the popular and widely available .45-70, which was the government standard at the time. These rifles found wide popularity in the American West, proving to be dependable and hard-hitting against any threat one might face. This example has the attractive casehardened frame which was standard on the model until around 1901, and it has standard markings. It is fitted with a German silver "Rocky Mountain" blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a crescent buttplate.
