Fine French Combination Hunting Sword and Single Shot Percussion Pistol by Fillon of Paris with Scabbard This 1830s to mid-19th century hunting sword with built in single shot percussion pistol would have been used for dispatching game. Similar weapons are known from the 16th century on. They were very useful when hunting wild boar or elk that might be disabled but not quickly killed by the hunter's dogs or initial shot. The front of the hilt is marked "Fillon Paris" flanked by floral scrollwork. The back has three dogs running down an elk. The blade has a dog running down an elk on the left above various designs including a cherub/angel and sunflower under a sun and over the Latin motto "Hoc Lumine/Vivimus" (This Light Lives) and a stand of arms. The right side has a dog chasing a wild boar over the same set of designs. The game scenes point towards the weapon's intended use. A box lock percussion pistol is built into the hilt and has the barrel and breech section on the right side of the blade. There is a small safety switch behind the trigger. It includes a leather scabbard with iron fittings. Provenance: Gillespie collection. Manufacturer: French Model: Percussion BBL: 2 7/8 inch round Stock: Gauge: 38 Percussion Finish: blue/bright/silver Grips: ebonized Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very good with mild pitting and gray patina along the blade and the scabbard's throat and tip, nearly all of the silver on the hilt, a faint crack in the hammer's neck, mild surface flaking of the leather, and cracking on each grip/scale, and the bottom of the right panel loose. The pistol is mechanically fine other than the ineffective safety. Overall, this is a very unique example of a French hunting sword with built in percussion pistol.
