Castro Fidel

Rectangular autograph album, 7.5" x 4.5". Pale blue outer covers with gilt titles of "Autografo De Heroes De La Revolution". Front and rear covers are neatly secured via a yellow satin ribbon, still intact. The booklet contains 7 pages, with the first page cream toned and the balance of the 6 pages in a pale pink. Signed inside circa March 1959 in ink. Autographed by over 20 Cuban revolutionaries, highlighted by the first page which includes Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and Raul Castro. Additional signers included a second Raul Castro, Camilo Cienfuegos, Rolando Cubela, Pedro Miret (2), Manuel Fernandez, Faustino Perez, Armando Hart, and Regino Boti. In overall excellent condition with light foxing to the soft covers, with some light foxing/staining to the first two internal pages.

An exceedingly rare collection featuring many of the biggest and most important names of the Cuban revolution, many of whom served in the cabinet of Manuel Urrutia Lleo, president of the first revolutionary government in 1959. To our knowledge, an autograph set encompassing the key players of the revolution has never been offered, and we have never seen the autographs of Guevara, Fidel and the current president Raul on the same page.

This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece, and embodies the autographs of all the movers and shakers of the Cuban revolution. In amazingly well preserved condition.

The sheer complexity and duration of The Cuban Revolution or the 'movement' for the 'people' had been brewing for years before it epic climax, going back to a time to when Castro was still a young attorney and first attempted to evoke change from authoritarian rule using his legal background and hoping the pen would be mightier than the sword. At the time, Batista antagonized the Cuban population by forming lucrative links to organized crime, becoming as brutal and vicious as any dictator in modern history and was completely indifferent to popular concerns. In early 1952, via a more peaceful attempt, Castro had first legally petitioned for the overthrow of Batista, whom he had accused of corruption and tyranny. However, his constitutional arguments were rejected by the Cuban courts. Castro was known to have remarked, "I am convinced more than ever of the dictatorship's intention, masked in many ways, to remain in power for twenty years, ruling as now by the use of terror and crime and ignoring the patience of the Cuban people, which has its limits". After deciding that the Cuban regime could not be replaced through legal means, Castro resolved to launch an armed revolution.
