Carved from light-toned alabaster or marble with delicate veining, this sculpture depicts a mother curled into a soft, organic form as she slumbers alongside her two young children. Signed and dated at base.

  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Ferenc Varga (May 9, 1906 – September 3, 1989) was an acclaimed Hungarian-born sculptor who emigrated to the United States following World War II. After studying under master sculptors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest, Varga established an international reputation by completing numerous public commissions, including major monuments and religious installations across Europe and North America. His work—noted for spanning classical figures to modernist forms—is featured in prominent museum and gallery collections worldwide, including the Hungarian National Gallery and the Vatican. In recognition of his lifetime contributions to the arts, he was awarded a gold medal by the Accademia Italia delle Arti del Lavoro in 1979. Varga later settled in Florida, continuing to sculpt and teach alongside his only child, the noted sculptor Frank Varga.
