FEDERAL PARQUETRY INLAID LAP DESK.
American, first quarter 19th Century. Cherry and walnut. Rectangular form, top decorated with line and string inlay, a central inlaid circle, and corners with fan inlay. Desk opens to a fitted interior with several open compartments, a pen tray, a slanted green baize writing surface, and two hinged compartments. Two pin-locking drawers on either end, and an iron teardrop escutcheon on the front. 8"h. 20"w. 10"d.

Cataloguer's note: Dr. Felix Brunot (1757-1834) was the close foster brother of the Marquis de Lafayette. Brunot immigrated to America in 1777 to serve on Lafayette's medical staff during the American Revolution, later settling in Pittsburgh, where he received Lafayette in 1825 as a visitor.

Provenance: The Lifetime Collection of Harley Trice (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania); purchased from Miss Elizabeth Brunot of Pittsburgh in 1985.

  • Condition: Cannot open drawers. Edge wear and minor losses, minor cracking throughout. Possibly a minor repair to a small section of string inlay. (NP 7.21.26)
