FEDERAL HEPPLEWHITE MICHAEL ALLISON (NEW YORK CITY, 1773 - 1855) PATRIOTIC MAHOGANY MARQUETRY CHEST OF DRAWERS WITH EAGLES, SHIELDS, AND STARS INLAID IN MIRRORED DIAMONDS.
American (New York, New York), first quarter 19th Century. Mahogany and mahogany veneer with pine secondary. Solid ends, French feet, four dovetailed drawers with applied beaded edges, shaped apron, deep top drawer with mirrored diamond inlays, each containing elliptical reserve with spread wing eagle with US shield on chest, and eighteen stars overhead. Original shield brasses with dove and olive branch and embossed peace. 44"h. 46"w. 21"d.

Catalogers' note: Louisiana became the 18th state in 1812. A similar chest of drawers by Allison is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. https://www.metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/2018

Provenance: The Lifetime Collection of Harley Trice (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania).

  • Condition: Two age splits on top, one stemming from proper left approx. 28"l. and one from proper right approx. 23"l. Cracking and losses to edge veneer, vertical crack on proper left side 14"l. Repair to proper left front led and possibly the right leg, too. Right leg veneer is damaged at foot. Scratching, some veneer loss, and cracking to eagles, repair to veneer above keyhole on top drawer. (NP 7.22.26)
