FDR 5 Signed Historic Photos 1932 DNC Acceptance Speech, Displayed in Series! 1 Presented to His Fave Photographer, Sam Schulman
SPs

A framed display comprised of five black and white photographs, each signed by 32nd U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882-1945), as "Franklin D Roosevelt"; the last photograph is signed and inscribed by him as "For Sam Schulman / from / Franklin D Roosevelt." N.d. but ca. 1932. N.p. Each photo in the assembled series shows a different moment from FDR's acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on July 2, 1932. Subsequently, a variety of Rooseveltian expressions and emotions are on display in this intriguing series reminiscent of William H. Taft in George H. Harris's 1908 "Evolution of a Smile." Isolated surface wear to the photos including scuffs. The third photograph has a small x-shaped closed tear at the center. Matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. Isolated wear including dings and dents to the frame. The sight size of each photograph is 5.75" x 7.75". The overall size of the frame is 40.75" x 14" x .75".

FDR famously broke the tradition that presidential candidates not accept their convention's nomination in person, when, on July 2, 1932, he stood before Democratic delegates to make his acceptance speech pitching his "New Deal for the American people." The background clues of the photograph - including the presence of the large, white California delegation flag at Roosevelt's rear - can be matched frame by frame with news reel footage of Roosevelt's 1932 DNC acceptance speech. Roosevelt, then Governor of New York, had secured his party's endorsement after winning four consecutive ballots. He and his running mate, then Speaker of the House John N. Garner, would sweep the 1932 presidential election in November.

Roosevelt presented one of the photographs to Samuel "Sammy" Schulman (ca. 1907-1980), one of the president's favorite photojournalists. A veteran press photographer, Schulman worked for International News Photos and other news services. In Schulman's autobiography, "Where's Sammy?", Schulman recounted that FDR would sometimes semi-anxiously, semi-comically ask where Sammy was at press conferences before beginning. Roosevelt himself described Sammy at a February 1943 news conference: "Some of you people in the East have seen a little photographer that used to follow me around the country in the old days - Sammy Schulman. He is a great boy, Sammy is." Later at that same news conference, Roosevelt confessed that he and Sammy had conspired to orchestrate the reunion between former French political opponents Charles de Gaulle and Henri Giraud at the January 1943 Casablanca Conference!
