Factory Engraved Marlin Model 1893 Deluxe Takedown Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter The accompanying factory letter lists this rifle with a 28 inch part octagon barrel in .38-55 caliber, pistol grip, 1/2 magazine and takedown configuration when it was shipped on June 7, 1895. The top barrel flat is marked with the two-line address/patent information ahead of the rear sight and "38-55" at the breech. It is fitted with combination Beach and elevation adjustable sights. The exposed barrel flats at the breech feature engraved scrollwork. The receiver is engraved with floral scrollwork on a punch dot background and scroll border. The left side of the receiver has a forest scene in an oval panel. A similar vignette is illustrated in William Brophy's "Marlin Firearms" on page 531. The scrollwork extends to the forend cap and takedown collar. Although not listed in the factory letter, we believe that the engraving is factory. As Brophy examples, "Unfortunately, the few remaining factory records do not, with any regularity, indicate if the gun was factory engraved or not." The top of the receiver is marked "MARLIN SAFETY." The upper tang is marked "MODEL/1893." The highly figured forearm and pistol grip stock feature multi-point checkering and a checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate. Manufacturer: Marlin Firearms Co Model: 1893 BBL: 28 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 38-55 Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 122304 Class: Antique Condition: Extremely fine. The barrel and magazine retain 95% original blue finish with the balance thinning to a gray. The remaining metal surfaces retain 75% plus original case colors. The wood is very fine with a hairline crack on the wrist (left side), some minor dings and scratches and crisp checkering with most of the finish remaining. There is a crudely repaired chip visible on the toe of the buttplate. Mechanically excellent. A high conditioned factory engraved Model 1893 deluxe takedown rifle that will be a centerpiece to any antique Marlin lever action collection.
