Factory Engraved Colt New Service Target Double Action .44-40 Revolver with Factory Letter The accompanying factory letter lists this revolver with a 7 1/2 inch barrel in .44-40 caliber, blue finish and type of stocks not listed when shipped to W.S. Brown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 22, 1921. Although the factory letter does not confirm the engraving, we firmly believe that the embellishment on this revolver was done by Glahn, a factory engraver. The engraving covers around 70% of the surfaces. Floral scrollwork on a punch dot background adorns the rear sides of the barrel, frame (including the flat top strap), cylinder flats and trigger guard. Floral motifs inside triangles are featured on the frame, cylinder flats and butt. Note the engraved patterns on the cylinder flats alternate. The area around the hammer has a zig zag line motif accented with an ornate star burst motif. It has standard Colt markings, target sights, fleur-de-lis grips numbered to the gun and checkered grip straps, trigger and hammer spur. Manufacturer: Colt Model: New Service BBL: 7 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44-40 Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 307499 Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Very fine as factory engraved. The revolver retains 95% factory blue finish showing some minor holster type wear. There is a moderate scuff mark on the trigger guard and a small patch of light pitting on the barrel. The engraving is crisp. The grips are fine with some chipping along the lower bottom edges and some blemishes in the checkering. Mechanically excellent. Nonetheless, a fine quality engraved Colt revolver.
