Very Fine Early Production Gustave Young Style Factory Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Revolver with Case and Accessories This beautiful revolver was manufactured in 1853 and features very fine Gustave Young Style Germanic scroll and floral engraving with stippled backgrounds and a wolf head design on the hammer. Young first started working for Colt just one year earlier and remained Colt's contractor for engraving into the mid-1860s. The barrel has a round post front sight and presentation style "Saml Colt" hand engraved with light flourishes at either end. "COLTS/PATENT" is engraved within a banner on the left side of the frame. The back strap was left plain where an inscription was often added. The cylinder has the standard stagecoach scene. All of the serial numbers match, including the grip in the back strap inlet, and the "center punch" mark used to denote factory engraving is by the main numbers. The grip has a piano varnished finish and attractive figure. The Model 1849 Pocket was Colt's most popular percussion revolver and helped firmly establish his name as synonymous with handguns. The revolver comes in a American style case with an Eley Bros. cap tin, lead bullets, later style Colt patent bullet mold, small "E PLURIBUS UNUM" single-sided eagle powder flask, key, combination tool, and Colt Cartridge Works package of five cartridges "EXPRESSLY FOR/COL. COLT'S PATENT/REVOLVING/POCKET PISTOL." Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1849 BBL: 6 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 31 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: highly figured walnut Serial Number: 65745 Class: Antique Condition: Very fine with 90% original silver plating with attractively aged patina, 75% original blue on the barrel, smooth gray and some surface dents on the cylinder, strong original heat blue finish on the screws, 50% subtle case colors on the balance, minor edge wear, some light spotting, and crisp engraving throughout. The highly figured varnished walnut grip is also very fine with mild surface scratches, a few dents on the butt, and most of the original finish. Mechanically excellent. The case and accessories are very good with mild storage wear and glue repairs visible in the partitions. This is overall an attractive example of the early work of Gustave Young and his shop for Colt.
