EXUBERANTLY COBALT-DECORATED FOUR GALLON DOUBLE-HANDLED STONEWARE JUG BY HAMILTON & JONES (ACTIVE 1866 - 1897, GREENSBORO, PENNSYLVANIA).
American, 19th Century. Of ovoid form with a flared rim with tooled base above a pair of applied, tooled strap handles, the front nearly covered with decoration including a stenciled label
with arched "Hamilton & Jones" above "Greensboro, Pa" with wreath and flourishes; the stenciled label surrounded by freehand brushed cobalt vining flowers and graduated highlight stripes flanking the "4" capacity mark. 18.5"h.

Provenance: From The Second Installment of The Beth & Earl Trimble Salt Glazed Stoneware Collection.

  • Condition: Two large chips at rim, minor discoloration and glaze loss, hairlines near joining parts of handles. U.V. illuminates losses. (BH.7.20.26)
