EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT AMERICAN WOOLWORK PICTURE
Mid-19th Century
Vibrantly colored and pristinely worked. Depicts an eagle perched on a Liberty shield flanked by American flags, a three-masted sailing ship flying an American flag, a lighthouse and drapery swags. Housed in its original red-painted frame with gilt trim.

  • Provenance:
The Private Collection of E. Norman Flayderman.
Northeast Auctions, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Marine and China Trade Auction, August 21, 2005, Lot #797.
The Collection of Nancy & Larry Dickson.

    Illustrated:
Scrimshaw and Scrimshanders, Whales and Whalemen by E. Norman Flayderman (New Milford, Ct.: N. Flayderman & Co., Inc., 1972), p. 292.

    Notes:
Sailors experienced with sailmaking and mending often used their skills with a needle to produce "woolies" in their spare time -- typically made as gifts for loved ones. The vast majority were made by British seamen, making this example with its bold Americana motifs incredibly rare and desirable. Describing it, auctioneer Ron Bourgeault in a 2005 issue of Antiques and the Arts Weekly said "I've never seen as good a one".
  • Dimensions: 18.5" x 20.5" sight. Framed 24" x 25.75".
  • Condition: Overall excellent condition with extremely strong colors, no major losses or repairs, and no significant staining. Several very small spots of loss within the sails of the vessel. Tiny losses at the extreme edges, mostly at the top, but only extremely minor damages elsewhere. Not examined out of frame.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects. All items may have normal signs of age and wear commensurate with their age; these issues will likely not be mentioned in the condition report. Please contact Eldred's before the auction with any condition questions. Questions about condition will not be answered after purchase. Condition reports are provided as a courtesy, and we are not responsible for any errors or omissions. Important note on frames: Frames are not guaranteed to be in the same condition as they are in the item photograph. Due to handling and shipping, many frames, especially antique ones, are prone to losses. If you have questions about the condition of a frame, please contact us prior to the auction.
