"When the first automobiles came chugging up Main Street driving the horses up the telephone poles and raising an intolerable dust, they overturned the old order of country life with the violence of an invading army. It is of these turbulent days when spark plugs and miles-per-gallon were first becoming current in Phelps, N.Y., that the author is writing about, the last in the "Country Lawyer", "Big Family" trilogy. Basically it follows the story of a small town farm boy who wants to work with machines, not horses. Ultimately the farm boy becomes the resident bicycle and then automotive expert in town. The author's role in the book is as the mechanic's friend and customer. What makes the book interesting & hilarious, are the vignettes of early motoring that must have been real-life events. How do you get a license for a car? Do they send you a big tag to hang on the car (no, you have to buy it yourself)? What do you do when the clutch needs adjustment at 2 AM on a road far from home and you're in evening clothes? The book is full of little tidbits that make the time period come to life. And there are several lengthy sections where Bellamy describes driving a long way to attend one of the first automobile races or how to fix a clincher tire."
