An exceptionally well-preserved and visually striking National Cash Register Company Model 347, serial number 1238787, manufactured by The National Cash Register Company of Dayton, Ohio, and sold in March of 1913 according to the original factory guarantee label retained inside the cash drawer. Finished in highly decorative nickel-plated brass over an elaborate repoussé case with lavish Art Nouveau and Victorian-inspired floral scrollwork, this register represents the pinnacle of American commercial craftsmanship during the Golden Age of retail merchandising. Founded in 1884 by John H. Patterson, the National Cash Register Company revolutionized retail accounting and security while simultaneously producing some of the most beautifully ornamented mechanical business machines ever manufactured. Their premium registers were intended not merely as accounting devices, but as statements of prosperity and refinement, occupying pride of place in pharmacies, jewelers, hotels, confectioners, department stores, and upscale mercantile establishments. This example features the desirable Model 347 configuration with richly embossed floral decoration across every visible surface, original raised denomination keys, ornate side panels, substantial operating crank, original marble cashier's shelf, glazed receipt compartment, and paneled oak base. The interior retains its original divided hardwood cash drawer complete with the surviving factory guarantee card identifying the register number, model size, finish, inspection information, and recorded sale date of March 18, 1913. The elaborate nickel finish remains exceptionally attractive, highlighting the crisp detail of the cast ornamentation throughout. The register displays beautifully as both a decorative object and an important example of early twentieth-century industrial design. Such ornate National registers have become highly sought after by collectors of Americana, advertising, mercantile antiques, and early mechanical devices due to their extraordinary craftsmanship and sculptural presence. A remarkable survivor from America's great era of commercial innovation, this National Cash Register combines historical significance with museum-quality decorative appeal and would make an outstanding centerpiece in a private collection, luxury retail environment, restaurant, or period interior.

  • Provenance: Originally sold March 18, 1913, as documented by the surviving factory guarantee label retained within the cash drawer. Believed to have remained in private ownership thereafter.
  • Literature: William L. Hausman, John L. Neufeld & Harold G. Williamson, *The Market for Capital Goods: The National Cash Register Company and the American Selling System.* Ralph W. Mossman, *The National Cash Register Story.* Various editions of National Cash Register Company factory catalogs, Dayton, Ohio, early 20th century.
  • Circa: Manufactured and sold March 18, 1913. The National Cash Register Company, Dayton, Ohio. Model 347. Serial No. 1238787.
  • Condition: Overall exceptionally well preserved for its age. Nickel-plated finish presents attractively with light, age-appropriate wear, scattered oxidation, and minor surface marks consistent with over a century of careful use. Embossed decoration remains remarkably crisp. Original marble cashier's shelf is present with minor surface wear. Glass receipt compartment is intact. Interior cash drawer retains original dividers and factory guarantee label showing serial number and sale information. Mechanical operation was not extensively tested and is offered as a display and collectible antique; buyers should assume servicing may be required for full functionality.
