Exceptional Winchester Third Model 1873 Lever Action 44-40 Rifle Manufactured in 1883. The barrel has a front sight with nickel-silver blade and buckhorn rear sight with serrated edges. The receiver has the Third Model integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor containing the four-piece cleaning rod. The top of the barrel has the two-line address/patent information ahead of the rear sight. The upper receiver tang is marked"- MODEL. 1873.-."There are no caliber markings on the barrel or cartridge elevator. The barrel, magazine, forearm cap, receiver and dust cover have the Winchester commercial blue finish. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut with a varnish finish. The rifle retains 95% original blue finish. The barrel, magazine and forearm cap retain nearly all of the blue finish; wear is limited to some extensive very minor scratches along the bottom of the magazine and forearm cap and several very small spots of pitting along the right side of the barrel. The receiver has close to 95% original finish with a few light storage scratches and several small spots of age discoloration or shallow pitting. Nearly all of the commercial blue finish is present on the dust cover. The loading gate has nearly all of the fire blue finish. The buttplate retains nearly all of the original case colors with some patches of darker age discoloration. The wood is excellent and retains nearly all of the original finish with minimal handling wear. There is a 1/2-inch dent and several smaller scratches on the lower right side of the stock. The dent shows traces of an old repair and is hard to spot without close examination. This is an excellent example of a classic "Gun that Won the West" Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action rifle.
