Exceptional Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Rifle with Special Order Half Octagon Barrel and Factory Letter Special order Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Rifle with part-round/part octagon barrel and full length magazine. This rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that describes this Model 1894 as: "Type: Rifle, Caliber: 30, Barrel Type: 1/2 Octagon, Trigger: Plain" and "Takedown". The letter states that this rifle was serialized on August 17, 1906, and shipped from Winchester on June 13, 1907. A Model 1894 Take-Down Rifle with 26-inch part-round barrel and full length magazine is a rare combination. The rifle has a blue barrel, magazine, forearm cap, bolt and receiver. The loading gate is a fiery niter blue. The hammer, lever, trigger and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are nicely figured, "Extra Finish" American walnut. The barrel has sporting style front sight with brass blade and set-screw on the right side and a rare "Winchester Express" rear sight with three folding leaves marked: "50", "1" and "2". The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped. The magazine take-down lever is stamped: "- PAT. JUNE 6. 1893 -". The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO./NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A. AUGUST 21. 1894" in small letters ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL BARREL/ESPECIALLY FOR SMOKELESS POWDER" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight. The caliber, "30 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top barrel flat. The oval Winchester "W/P" proof marks are stamped on the top barrel flat ahead of the caliber designation and on the top of the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "MODEL 1894/-WINCHESTER-/TRADE MARK" in three lines. The serial number is stamped across the bottom of the receiver behind the take-down collar. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1894 BBL: 26 Inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 30 WCF Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 314292 Class: Curio & Relic Long Gun Condition: Excellent. The barrel and full length magazine retain 98% of the bright original high polish blue finish; the magazine lacks the scuff marks usually found on take-down rifles. The blue on the forearm cap shows traces of thinning on the sides. The receiver has some very light finish wear on high points with some scattered and very minor age spotting on the sides. The bolt has all of the blue finish. 99% of the bright nitre blue finish is present on the loading gate. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate retain 98% of the case colors with traces of silvering on the edges of the buttplate heel and toe. All of the markings are perfect. The walnut stock and forearm are both in excellent condition. This is an excellent example of a special order Winchester Model 1894 Take-Down Rifle with the seldom encountered combination of part-round barrel and full-length magazine.
