Exceptional Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Sporting Rifle Formerly from the McCroskie Collection with Factory Letter This is an extraordinary example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Sporting rifle that was manufactured in 1889. This rifle features a blue 30 inch No. 3 octagon barrel chambered for the .32/40 W.C.F. cartridge, color casehardened, receiver, lever, breechblock and hammer, straight grip American walnut stock with casehardened crescent buttplate and Schnabel forearm with ebony insert at the tip. The barrel is fitted with a standard sporting rear sight. Winchester special order features on this rifle include a Rocky Mountain front sight with blade, Lyman folding combination tang sight and a single set trigger. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum Records Office letter that confirms the rifle's features and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on April 12, 1889. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two-line legend: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/ -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS Co. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "32-40" is stamped on the top barrel flat at the breech. "PAT. OCT. 7TH 79." is stamped on the lower tang behind the trigger, and the serial number "31341" is stamped on the lower tang between the rear tang screws. The accompanying factory letter verifies the rifle configuration, caliber, #3 30 inch octagon barrel, set trigger, Lyman rear and knife blade front sight, and that it was received in and shipped out of the warehouse to order number 20603 on April 12, 1889. This rifle was formerly part of the McCroskie Collection. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1885-Rifle BBL: 30 Inch octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 32-40 WCF Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 31341 Class: Antique Condition: Near new. The rifle is all original and retains nearly all of the blue finish on the barrel. The receiver has fiery case colors. The case colors on the lever are slightly muted from handling, and the case colors on the buttplate have faded slightly with traces of age discoloration and some pitting on the edges of the buttplate heel and toe. The front sight blade is missing. The stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition and retain nearly all of the original finish. Wear is limited to three tiny dents on the stock and several barely noticeable handling marks on the stock and forearm. This is an excellent and nearly new example of a Winchester Model 1885 High Wall Sporting rifle with special order single set trigger, front sight and tang sight.
