Exceptional Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter Winchester Fourth Model 1866 Saddle Ring Carbine manufactured in 1882 with Cody Firearms Museum letter. The Cody letter identifies "Model 1866, serial number 157490" as: "Carbine" and states that it was shipped from Winchester on March 21, 1882. The carbine has the distinctive brass receiver and buttplate with blued barrel, magazine, barrel bands and bolt, fire blue loading gate and color casehardened hammer and lever. The stock and forearm are oil-finished, straight grain, American walnut. A staple-mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The carbine has the late style crowned barrel, screw-fastened magazine cap and post front sight mounted behind the barrel band. The barrel has the late style folding leaf rear sight marked "1873" at the top of the leaf that folds toward the receiver. The Fourth Model receiver has less drop ahead of the hammer than previous models and the serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang behind the lever latch. The upper tang is secured by a single screw. The hammer has impressed, bordered, knurling on the spur. The brass, carbine style, buttplate has a sliding brass trapdoor and the butt trap contains a three-piece, jointed, steel cleaning rod. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend, "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING-ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING"S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER. 6. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 BBL: 20 inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 44 rimfire Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 157490 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. This exceptional carbine is all original and highly attractive. The barrel and magazine retain 90% of the original blue finish. The only significant wear is one small (1/4-inch) spot of pitting on the lower left side of the barrel that is nearly unnoticeable without close inspection. The barrel legend is sharp. The rear sight has nearly all of the blue and casehardened finish intact. The sides of the barrel bands have some slight scuff marks but the bands retain about 70% of the original blue finish. Most of the blue finish is present on the rim-fire bolt. The loading gate retains 70% of the fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger and lever have 95% plus of the muted case colors. The brass receiver and buttplate are both in excellent condition with an extremely attractive, untouched, patina. The walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition and have nearly all the original finish with minimal handling and storage wear. Winchester Model 1866 carbines were almost inevitably used as "working" guns and are rarely found with more than traces of original finish. This is an exceptional example of a Winchester Model 1866 Saddle Ring carbine that would be extremely hard to improve upon.
