Exceptional Second Model Winchester 1873 Lever Action .44-40 Rifle Winchester Model 1873 rifle manufactured c. 1881. This rifle has the Second Model receiver with screw-fastened dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated rear edges. The 24-inch, full octagon barrel has a special order gold-plated Beach folding combination front sight and buckhorn sporting style rear sight with knurled edges. A Lyman folding combination rear sight with knurled short stem and large peep is mounted on the receiver tang. The steel crescent buttplate has a sliding brass trap door. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped: "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29.1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. The serial number is stamped in script numerals on the lower tang between the lever latch and rear tang screw. The barrel and cartridge elevator, correctly, do not have caliber markings. The rifle has the Winchester charcoal blue finish on the barrel, magazine, receiver and dust cover. The loading gate has a fire blue finish. The hammer, trigger, lever and crescent buttplate are color casehardened. The stock and forearm are oil-finished straight grain American walnut. This rifle is all original and retains 90% of the blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel and magazine have 90% of the original blue with very light wear on the barrel edges and some scattered age spotting. The Winchester legend is sharp and crisp. The receiver, side plates and dust cover retain 90% plus of the original blue finish with some minor edge wear and scattered, light, age spotting. The hammer, trigger and lever retain 70% of the original case colors, vibrant in protected areas. The case colors on the buttplate have silvered and the buttplate has patches of dark age discoloration. The stock and forearm remain excellent with 90% or more of the original oil finish. Most of the finish wear is confined to the bottom of the forearm. This is an attractive example of a Winchester Second Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with desirable Beach front and Lyman folding combination tang sights.
