Exceptional New Haven Arms Company Volcanic Lever Action Carbine Volcanic lever action carbine manufactured by the New Haven Arms Company c. 1857. This carbine is in near new condition and is accompanied by a inventory description by Winchester expert R.L. Wilson. Some unsold New Haven Arms Volcanic carbines remained in the Winchester factory until the late 1930s or early 1940s when they were sold to Winchester employees for .50 cents apiece. This carbine is probably one of those guns. The carbine has the distinctive "Type I" octagon barrel with integral 20-shot magazine and brass receiver and crescent buttplate. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the New Haven Arms marking: "PATENT NEWHAVEN CONN. FEB. 14. 1854". Traces of the earlier "VOLCANIC REPEATING ARMS CO." marking are partially visible above the crisp patent markings. The New Haven Arms Company omitted the Volcanic markings after it was established by Oliver Winchester in April 1857. The number "9" (possible a police department rack number) is stamped on the bottom of the frame behind the carrier block. The barrel has a half moon nickel silver front sight. A rear sight with round elevation wheel is mounted on the top of the receiver behind the ejection port. The rear sight has a fiery niter blue finish. The hammer is color casehardened. The carrier block, lever, trigger and bolt have a high polish blue finish. All of the screws are bright and appear to have never been finished. The stock is straight grain American walnut stock with a varnished piano finish. Most of the New Haven Arms Volcanic carbines had engraved receivers and buttplates. Carbines with plain polished fames are rare. This carbine was formerly part of the Robert M. Lee collection and is accompanied by an inventory sheet prepared by R.L Wilson and dated 21-25 April 1997 that describes the carbine. The serial number ("3068") is stamped on the stock, buttplate and both buttplate screws. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: Volcanic BBL: 16 inch octagon Stock: varnished walnut Gauge: 41 Volcanic Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 3068 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. 95% of the original blue finish is present on the barrel and integral magazine. The New Haven Arms patent markings are crisp. The rear sight has 90% plus of the niter blue finish. Significant amounts of the delicate, high polish blue remain on the bottom of the carrier block and bolt. Traces of blue finish are present on the lever and trigger. The hammer retains 85% of the original case colors. The brass receiver and crescent buttplate are in excellent, untouched condition with a beautiful aged patina. The side plate joints are perfect and the receiver and buttplate are free from scratches and handling marks. The screw heads are in perfect condition with a good looking dove gray patina. The stock is in excellent condition and retains most of the high polish varnish. Wear is limited to a few scattered and numerous scattered very insignificant handling marks. This nearly new New Haven Arms Volcanic carbine is one of the very best examples of these rare and historically significant firearms existent. It would be a stand-out piece in the fines collection of Winchester lever action rifles. Provenance: The Robert M. Lee Collection.
