Exceptional Factory Engraved Marlin Ballard No. 6 1/2 Third Model Rigby Off Hand Single Shot Rifle The No. 6 1/2 Rigby Off Hand rifles were manufactured from 1880 to 1892. This rifle is fitted with a 28 inch round barrel with adjustable spirit level wind gauge front sight, no rear sight seat, and a raised engraved Rigby style flat ribs near the breech on the top and each side. The top section has a "BALLARD" marked banner. The bottom of the barrel, rear interior forearm and action and breech block are marked with the matching serial number "14763". The forged rebated and faceted receiver has a three-line Marlin address/Ballard patent date on the upper left side. It features rich scroll, geometric, and buck deer game scene engraving patterns. It is fitted with a Marlin's improved mid range vernier peep sight. The stock and forearm are checkered extra fancy English walnut with reddish brown marble cake grain, horn forearm tip, and a pistol grip buttstock with cheekpiece and the early farrow pattern Swiss buttplate. Very similar examples with slightly varying game scenes can be seen on the cover and page 213 of J. Dutcher's Book, BALLARD: THE GREAT AMERICAN SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. The rifle retains 90% plus of the original blue finish on the barrel and 90% plus vivid case colors on the frame with some slight scratches and areas of light spotting. 40% of the nickel plating remains on the buttplate with some visible brass. The wood is very fine with sharp checkering and only small a few minor imperfections including a small chip on the comb. Rigby Ballard rifles have long been considered one of the finest off hand rifles. Used by many of the prominent riflemen of the day.
