EXCEPTIONAL AND ELABORATELY BRUSHED AND STENCILED COBALT DECORATED HAMILTON & JONES (ACTIVE 1851 - 1880, GREENSBORO, PENNSYLVANIA) UNUSUAL FIFTEEN GALLON STONEWARE JAR.
American (Southwestern Pennsylvania), 19th Century. Of semi-ovoid form with rounded rim, incised shoulder, and cobalt-highlighted, applied lug handles. With a bold cobalt stripe under the rim followed by classic southwestern Pennsylvania scalloped drape; the upper half of the body with exuberantly brushed vining fuchsia floral decoration; a thick cobalt band around the middle marks the transition to the lower half that is covered with stenciling, including mark reading "Hamilton & Jones" above a band of unusual six-pointed stars flanked by larger, five-pointed stars, with an eagle centered at the bottom above the "15" capacity mark, flanked by large five-pointed stars. 22.5"h. Illustrated: "Stoneware of Southwestern Pennsylvania" by Phil Schaltenbrand (fig. 146).

Cataloguer's note: Fifteen gallon capacity marks are extremely unusual and scarce. An uncommon size, rarely are they found and particularly with such well-developed decoration.

Provenance: From The Second Installment of The Beth & Earl Trimble Salt Glazed Stoneware Collection.

  • Condition: Discoloration to main decoration, small areas of glaze loss and flaking mostly near base, chip in right handle, small hairline in left handle. (BH.7.20.26)
