Excellent Civil War Starr Arms Model 1858 Breech Loading Percussion Saddle Ring Carbine The Starr breech loading carbine was submitted for U.S. government evaluation in January 1858 as a rival to the Sharps. Starr Arms Co. manufactured approximately 20,601 of these Model 1858 percussion carbines during the Civil War, and the vast majority saw hard use. However, this highly attractive example somehow appears to have seen very little if any use at all and has been beautifully preserved, providing a look at what these carbines looked like when fresh in the hands of Union troops during the Civil War. It features standard blade front and two-leaf rear sights, a sling ring mounted on the left of the receiver, small inspection initials "H.G.S" on the left of the breech and on top of the stock ahead of the buttplate tang, and two bordered script "STB" (Samuel T. Bugbee) inspection cartouches stamped on the left wrist of the stock. It is numbered "18562" on the right of the breech block wedge and "20358" on the underside of the barrel. Due to its high state of condition, it appears that this carbine was likely factory assembled this way with these two differing numbers.
