Excellent Civil War Gwyn & Campbell Type II Carbine Manufactured in 1863-1864. The breech loading carbine has the Type II pivot-type lever latch, short lever, flat hammer with beveled edges and short base rear sight. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The barrel has a military blue finish with wide base iron front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight, breechblock, upper receiver tang and buttplate have a niter blue finish. The receiver, side plate, hammer, lever and lower tang are casehardened. The stock is oil finished black walnut. The lock plate is marked "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch above "PATENT/1862/HAMILTON.O." "UNION/RIFLE" is on the right side of the receiver. The serial number appears on the receiver, barrel and breechblock. Single letter Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on most components. The Ordnance Department final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "WHR" in a rectangle is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. A small block letter "WHR" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the stock comb. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured approximately 4,000 Type II carbines. They were issued primarily to Federal cavalry regiments in the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of the Tennessee. Manufacturer: Gwyn & Campbell Model: Union BBL: 20 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 52 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 2753 Class: Antique Condition: Excellent. The carbine is in as issued, unfired condition and retains 97% of the original casehardened finish with only very minor storage wear. The barrel has 95% plus of the military blue finish. The receiver, hammer and loading lever retain nearly all of the fiery case colors. Most of the high polish niter blue finish is present on the breechblock. The niter blue on the upper tang, buttplate and rear sight has some flaking but remains about 85% complete. The stock is in the same excellent condition as the barrel and receiver with unhandled raised feathered grain and nearly perfect Ordnance inspection mark. Wear is limited to a few very minor storage bruises. This is an excellent example of a Federal Civil War Gwyn & Campbell Type II Union cavalry carbine that would be very difficult to improve upon.
