Ettore di Giorgio ( 1887-1971 ) Italian engraver and painter

Ettore di Giorgio ( 1887-1971 ) Italian engraver and painter. Born in Alexandria in Egypt, after his classical studies he moved to Italy where from 1904 to 1911 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, mainly studying engraving techniques under the guidance of De Carolis . From 1912 to 1914 he resides in Munich where he began his work as an engraver by practicing woodcut , brought back in vogue by the Italian guild of woodcuts , founded by Adolfo De Carolis and Ettore Cozzani in those years. Between 1913 and 1914 he was among the illustrators of the magazine L'Eroica , founded and directed in La Spezia da Cozzani, which was one of the most prestigious and exclusive reviews of original woodcut of the time. He took part in various recording exhibitions: in Levanto at the 1912 Woodcut Exhibition [1] , in Bologna at the Black and White Exhibition , in Rome in 1921 and in 1923 at the I and II Biennial, at the IIA Biennial of the ISIA of 1923. Still in 1923 he was in Paris where he inaugurated his first solo exhibition at the Cercle des Alliés . At the Venice Biennials he exhibited regularly (except for 1934) from 1912 to 1940, both engravings and paintings. At the end of the 1920s he was called to teach in Urbino . Continue to take part in exhibitions in Italy (Florence, Livorno, Naples, Viareggio) and abroad (Athens, Berlin). In 1934 he moved to teach at the Art Institute of Naples . In 1939 he exhibited at the III Quadrennial in Rome and at the National Painting Competition in San Remo where he was the winner with a Portrait of a Lady , now exhibited at the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome.Due to an accident he loses his left hand; after 1940 he exhibited more rarely, devoting himself almost exclusively to painting. In 1969 he moved to Viareggio where he died in 1971. Offered here is an original woodcut print, image approx. 8 x 5-1/4 in. plus margins. VG
