Engraved Winchester Model 1866 Carbine This Winchester Model 1866 saddle ring carbine manufactured in 1869 and subsequently engraved in the period, by possibly a New York retailer. The carbine has a round barrel and full length magazine. The barrel has the first style upper barrel band with integral front sight blade and early, two leaf rear sight. A staple mounted saddle ring is located on the left side of the receiver. The brass crescent buttplate has a hinged trapdoor. The barrel and magazine are blued, the barrel bands, lever, hammer and trigger are color casehardened and the brass receiver and buttplate are nickel plated. The stock and forearm are straight grain American walnut. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style legend: "WINCHESTER'S REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN, CT./KING'S-IMPROVEMENT- PATENTED-MARCH. 29. 1866, OCTOBER 16. 1860." in two-lines ahead of the rear sight. The serial number "47867" is stamped in block numerals on the lower tang behind the trigger. The entire receiver, cartridge elevator, upper and lower tang and buttplate heel are all decorated. The engraving consists of tight Germanic scrollwork on a punch dot background with scallop and dot borders on the top of the receiver, upper and lower tang and buttplate. Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1866 BBL: 20 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 44 RF Finish: blue/nickel plated Grips: Serial Number: 47867 Class: Antique Condition: Good. The receiver and buttplate have been period re-plated and the stock and forearm have been sanded and refinished. The barrel and magazine retains about 30% of the original blue finish with surface discoloration and scattered light pitting. The barrel markings are faint. The lever retains about 50% of the nickel plated finish. The case colors on the barrel bands, hammer and buttplate have faded to a mottled gray patina. The engraving is well executed and remains crisp.
