Factory Engraved Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Single Action Revolver This variation of Merwin, Hulbert & Co.'s "Army" revolver was manufactured by Hopkins & Allen in Norwich, Connecticut, only around 1876-1878 with minor variations before the solid frame versions entered the market. It features "scooped" cylinder, integral blade and notch sights, standard Merwin, Hulbert & Co. and Hopkins & Allen markings on the barrel, smooth grips, and a lanyard ring on the butt. Over 75% of the metal surfaces are adorned with floral, punch dot, and scroll designs. The left side between the recoil shield and top of the grips has an eagle looking right with a snake in its beak clearly based on the Mexican coat of arms suggesting the revolver was produced for a Mexican client. The matching assembly number "438" is on the various components. The underside of the right grip also has the matching "438" assembly number hand marked over what appears to be a signature. Manufacturer: Merwin Hulbert & Co Model: First Model Army BBL: 7 inch round Stock: Gauge: 44-40 Finish: nickel Grips: bone Serial Number: 2402 Class: Antique Condition: Very good with most of the period replated nickel finish remaining. There are some patches of light pitting, and the muzzle is slightly worn at an angle. The engraving and most of the markings remain crisp, but parts of the barrel markings are a little obscured. The grips are fine with some shrinkage from age, attractive natural variation and grain, age cracking on the butt, chip at the toe on the right, a spliced repair on the right rear with a chip, and tight fit. Mechanically fine.
