Engraved L. Van Solingen Small Bore Dutch Flintlock Rifle There were two Jan van Solingen active as gunmakers in Amsterdam, the first in the late 17th century to early 18th century and the second in the first half of the 18th century per the Riijks Museum in Amsterdam. This small bore rifle has a swamped barrel with eight-groove rifling, a dovetailed brass blade front sight, dovetailed iron notch rear sight, and dot and scroll engraving ahead of the rear sight and on the breech section. The brass lockplate is signed "I:VAN SOLINGEN/AMSTERDAM" and has scroll, floral, and border engraving. "IP" is marked on the inside of the lock. The frizzen design is very interesting; it has a rotating steel and separate pan cover. This would make the gun easier to carry safely while loaded as the battery face could be turned away while the powder remains covered. The furniture is brass with nice cast and engraved designs, particularly the sideplate which has pierced scrollwork man in a chariot, and the finely figured root-wood stock has a horn forend cap, fine molding, raised relief floral carving, an oval cheekpiece, wood patchbox lid, and "HL/50" brass inventory tag on the bottom.

  • Condition: Very good with silver-gray patina on the barrel and iron lock components, aged patina on the brass lockplate and furniture, generally minor overall wear, cracked trigger guard bow, and some absent hardware from the patchbox lid and trigger group adjustment screw. The stock is fair with attractive figure throughout, several chips and cracks concentrated on the forend, insect damage visible on the patchbox lid, repaired cracks in the butt, and distinct but worn carving. Mechanically needs work: the triggers aren't releasing the lock.
