North Africa, Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664–332 BCE. Cast bronze figure of Osiris, lord of the dead and judge of the afterlife, standing mummiform with arms crossed over the chest in the gesture of resurrection. He holds the crook and flail, emblems of kingship, and wears the tall atef crown with twin ostrich plumes flanking a central cone, surmounted by a solar disk. The lower body shows a green cuprous patina from burial; the upper surfaces retain a darker bronze sheen. Votive statuettes of this type were dedicated in temples and shrines throughout Egypt as appeals to Osiris for a favorable passage into the afterlife. During the Late Period, such bronze votive figures were produced in large numbers by the lost-wax method and often buried in sacred caches when shrines were cleared. Size: 1.4" W x 4.4" H (3.6 cm W x 11.2 cm H); on included custom stand: 1.4" W x 6" H (3.6 cm W x 15.2 cm H).
