“At Nootka” is a seminal 1915 hand-pulled photogravure by the legendary American photographer and ethnologist Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868–1952). The artwork captures two individuals in a traditional canoe navigating a waterway on the west coast of Vancouver Island, set against a dramatic backdrop of misty Pacific Northwest mountains. It was officially copyrighted in 1915 and published in 1916 as Plate 386 within Portfolio XI of Curtis's monumental 20-volume historical masterwork, The North American Indian. Hand-pulled photogravure from an original large-format glass plate negative. Original Engraver: John Andrew & Son, Boston. The Nootka (Nuu-chah-nulth) people of the Wakashan linguistic stock, native to the Pacific Northwest coast. Approx. 22" x 18" sheet size. Visible copper plate impression edge around the image. Imprints of John Andrew & Son and Copyright 1915. Open-market auction value between $1,500 and $4,500.
