Early Tattoo Machine Built by Doc King
(Joliet, Illinois, 1921)
Rare and exceptional tattoo machine built by pioneering tattoo artist Joseph W. Agnich (1897-1975), better known as Doc King, Joliet, Illinois, 1921. One of only fifteen machines made by King in the spring of 1921 with the assistance of his friend, machinist Jack Walter Nowak (1891-1957). The men divided the machines, King retaining seven and Nowak eight, the latter, including the present example, stamped on the underside with his initials. Following Nowak's death in 1957, King acquired his entire tattooing outfit, including the remaining machines, which he later sold to Milwaukee tattoo artist John L. "Hands" Vingert. King kept the other seven machines, which became part of his now-iconic travel trunk, created around the same time with the help of renowned Milwaukee tattoo artist Amund Dietzel. Constructed of nickel-plated brass. Stamped "J.W.N." on the underside of the frame.
