[Early Printing] Vegetius Renatus, Flavius. Flavii Vegetii Renati Vier bücher der Ritterschafft...

(Augsburg: Heinrich Stainer, 1529). Third German edition. Folio. 104 leaves; lacking R6 (blank). From the library of French Orientalist Charles Schefer, and with his armorial book-plate on front paste-down. Printed in two columns. Illustrated with woodcut title-page within woodcut border and 123 fine full-page and in-text woodcuts. Full vellum, yapp edges, stamped in gilt; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; small bookseller's ticket in top corner of verso front free endpaper; scattered light spotting; mild toning.

A scarce and handsome copy of this German translation of Late Roman writer Vegetius' classic military guide, De re militari. First published in a German translation ca. 1485, the second German edition followed in 1511, and this third edition in 1529, including a new translation and woodcuts. The fine and numerous woodcuts depict a variety of military equipment, some very curious, including siege equipment, cannons, underwater diving suits, and other various military weapons and attire.
