EARLY PENNSYLVANIA FRAKTUR VORSCHRIFT FOR JACOB RUSH, LIKELY BERKS COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, IN THE MANNER OF ABRAHAM BRUBAKER.
American, early 19th Century (dated 1799 and 1803). Ink and watercolor on laid paper. This English-language writing specimen (vorschrift) features Biblical verses from Proverbs and Psalms interspersed with formal penmanship exercises. The vibrant composition is decorated with stylized distelfink-type birds, multi-tiered tulips, floral vines, and geometric flourishes. The upper master calligraphy text reads in part, "My son if thou wilt receive..." and concludes at the bottom, "The doing nothing is very near doing evil, Anno 1799." The lower portion features a central heart with a faint red ink ownership inscription reading: "This belonging to me Jacob Rush dated this 17th of March Anno Domini 1803." Framed, 19"w. 16"h.

Cataloguer's note: This writing specimen (Vorschrift) represents the beautiful crossover era of bilingual Pennsylvania German folk art. While the master text and intricate borders were executed by a schoolmaster in 1799, the lower alphabets and 1803 heart inscription represent the student's own penmanship practice. The 1800 Reading Borough, Berks County Pennsylvania census records a Jacob Rush as head of household (aged aged 26-44) with a young male child under 10 years of age, possibly this Jacob Rush.
