Early Kentucky Cherry Sheraton Chest
This early example is cherry primary wood and popular secondary wood throughout. It has a joiner Sheraton form of construction with a unique three drawer over three drawer form. The top is two cherry boards. The case is beautifully proportioned with a 9" tall turned leg that ends with a ring and small spike. The six drawers of the chest are dovetailed construction with scratch cock beading around the edges. The back boards are hand planed and retain an original untouched patina. Overall quite an original piece of Kentucky furniture. This piece was found in an eastern Clark County, Kentucky Estate. Circa 1810-1850. Provenance: This piece was part of the collection of the late Mrs. Myra Swope Munday of historic Bright's Inn in Stanford, KY. Bright's Inn was built by a Kentucky Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Bright. It was a frontier stage coach stop on the Wilderness Trail and hosted many early Kentucky settlers and statesmen from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. Dimensions 47" tall by 43 7/8" wide by19 ½" deep.

Update 7/27: Had two questions about the difference in color on the drawer facings and talked to the consignor who reiterated that the piece has been in the family for 40+ years and not touched by anyone during that time. Also realize that the early "country" makers used what was available to them and perhaps the facings were made by not using a big board of cherry but could have been made from the leftover wood the maker had. It is all cherry not any mixed wood. Another explanation could be where the wood came from on the tree. It the maker used heartwood then of course, it would be darker than wood that came from the outer wood on the log. Just some thoughts.
