Early Federal Kentucky Cherry Sideboard
This early federal Kentucky Cherry sideboard has Cherry primary wood with popular secondary wood. The case configuration is a unique deep three drawer over four blind door. The three upper drawers are 9" deep and could have housed early sugar cones. There are two wide drawers centered around a narrower middle drawer. The middle drawer has evidence of an old lock for safekeeping of valuables. The drawers are dovetailed construction with applied cock bead molding around the edges. The top of the piece is two solid cherry boards. Below the drawers is a rim of half round trim. The case front has two full turned columns with a reverse taper twisted rope. The legs have a round ring turning and a knife edge, followed by a tapered section which ends out on a ball. The four blind doors conceal an inner compartment with a single shelf. The shelf support is dovetailed into the case. Although the maker of this sideboard is unknown, this form with twisted columns was produced by cabinet makers from both Mercer County and Bourbon County Kentucky. Due to its construction characteristics and form, this piece is believed to be made between 1810 and 1840. Truly an early product of Bluegrass Craftmanship. Provenance: This piece was part of the collection of the late Mrs. Myra Swope Munday of historic Bright's Inn in Stanford, KY. Bright's Inn was built by a Kentucky Revolutionary War veteran Captain John Bright. It was a frontier stage coach stop on the Wilderness Trail and hosted many early Kentucky settlers and statesmen from the late 1700s until the early 1900s. Dimensions 45" tall x 49" wide x 21 ¼" deep.
