DWM Model 1900 Swiss Luger Semi-Automatic Pistol with Rare A Letter Suffix Serial Number and Holster This is a very fine example of a early 1900 Swiss military contract Luger with the ultra rare "A" suffix serial number. As discussed on pages 27-31 of Fred Datig's "Swiss Variations", research from Switzerland indicates that the "A" suffix Swiss pistols were originally "E" prefix Swiss guns from a range of "E588" to "E735", which were renumbered; the reason for this renumbering is unknown. This pistol (formerly "E642" per Datig) retains its original 7.65 mm Luger auto caliber chambering with the 4 7/8 inch rapid taper barrel, old style long frame with the flat mainspring, early dished toggles with the toggle lock, recessed flat breechblock and grip safety. It also retains the original narrow trigger. The top of the chamber area has the "Swiss cross" in sunburst crest with the DWM scroll monogram on the front toggle link. The left side of the barrel extension is stamped with the small Swiss cross and the "+/V" control or firing proof of Herr Vogelsang the Swiss inspector at the DWM factory, as well as a large "P 38" stamp, indicating release for private sale in 1938. The full serial number "A/5042" is stamped on the underside of the barrel with the last two or three digits of the serial number stamped on the various small parts. It includes original Swiss pattern nickel-plated magazine with the unnumbered wooden Swiss base, as well as a Swiss style brown leather holster with a faint "RUDOLPH" maker's mark between the belt loops. Manufacturer: DWM Model: 1900 BBL: 4 3/4 inch round Stock: Gauge: 7.65 mm Luger Auto Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 5042A Class: Curio & Relic Handgun Condition: Fine as arsenal refurbished, showing 95% of the armory blue finish, with some mild scattered spotting, bright edge wear and mild handling marks overall. The grips are fine, with some mild dings and stains, and the small components show over 70% of the original straw and niter blue finish, with a gray patina on the edges. The holster is good, with some scuffs, stains and verdigris buildup. Mechanically excellent.
