Duval Eliot
(1909-1990)
"The Audition," 1938
Pencil on paper
Signed and inscribed in pencil lower right: Henniger Sept 20 / Duval Eliot; dated again, titled, and numbered in ink, all presumably by the artist, on a label affixed to the frame's backing board: "LPD-107 / 'The Audition' / Sept. 20, 1938"

  • Dimensions: Sight: 33 1/2 x 21 1/2in
  • Medium: Pencil on paper
  • Notes:
Duval Eliot received much of her earliest formal training while enrolled at the Art Center School in Los Angeles during the early 1930s. The painter, watercolorist, and illustrator Joseph Henniger (referenced via the inscription in the lower right corner of this lot) is known to have been one of her teachers during that time. Eliot graduated from the school around 1934, only to return a short time later, in 1937, as an instructor. The "Henniger" portion of the inscription above her signature on this lot may indicate that Joseph Henniger served as the model for this depiction of an actor studying printed materials prior to an audition, but more likely suggests that Eliot must have chosen to audit Henniger's life drawing class, alongside the students, even after she returned to Art Center School as a faculty member one year prior to the date of this drawing. In fact, a many of the figure studies of this period on the website (www.duvaleliot.com) maintained by Duval and Don Eliot's only child, Tamara, are similarly inscribed "Henniger" (including one image of a female) along with a date in one of their lower corners. As with this lot, those circa 1938 drawings are also identified on the artist's website by three-digit numbers preceded by "LPD-."
