Dr. Fukushi Masaichi Tattooed Skin Broadside [Tattoo - Medical - Ephemera]
(Tokyo, Japan, ca. 1946)
Rare printed news flyer depicting the tattooed construction contractor Masuyama Iijiro of Onjuku, Chiba Prefecture, shown in full-body horimono, published by San Shashin Shimbun or Sun Pictorial Daily, Tokyo, Japan, ca. 1946. Issued under the headline "Tattoos That Remain After Death." The accompanying text reports that Masuyama had arranged for his skin to be acquired after death by Dr. Fukushi Masaichi (1878-1956), a noted physician and professor at Tokyo Imperial University and the pioneering Japanese pathologist who assembled the world's most important collection of preserved tattooed human skin for scientific and anthropological study. His collection ultimately comprised more than one hundred documented specimens and remains a cornerstone of modern scholarship on Japanese tattooing.
