DONATIEN MARIE JOSEPH DE VIMEUR, VISCOMTE DE ROCHAMBEAU
(1755-1813) French military commander and the son of Jean-Baptiste Rochambeau, hero of the American Revolution, for whom he served as aide-de-camp in 1781-1782. Participated in the failed attempt to re-establish French authority during the Haitian Revolution after the death of Leclerc. Despite the tactics of terror that he practiced, Rochambeau capitulated to Jacques Dessalines and the insurgent troops in November, 1803. Killed in action during the German campaign of 1813. A four-line A.E.S. at the conclusion of a fine content manuscript L.S. by PIERRE PANISSE (1762-1826) French military officer who served as Rochambeau's aide-de-camp during the French colonial campaigns in the West Indies. In 1796, Panisse was made colonel, and subsequently adjutant general. The document signed ‘Panisse', 2pp. legal folio, Paris, Dec. 19, 1796, is written to Minister of War, Claude-Louis Petiet and concerns the reimbursement of two horses which were ‘….taken from me by the English during the capture of Martinique. As I was leaving for Saint-Domingue at that time and preferred to receive them on site, you authorized General Rochambeau to arrange the purchase of two horses on behalf of the government. Not having been in office, I was unable to make use of your decision…and I ask you to kindly arrange reimbursement of the amount according to the compensation rates established in Article 2 of the decree of the Executive Directory of the 11 Brumaire Year 5. As for the equipment…I have done what was necessary, having had to depart for America at the time of the expedition….'. On the verso, DONATIEN MARIE ROCHAMBEAU pens an A.E.S. signed ‘Dtn Rochambeau', in full: ‘[I] attest that Citizen Panisse, my aide-de-camp, did not receive the two horses he had been authorized to accept from the administrator in Saint-Domingue, and that he did not receive their value...G[enera]l 3rd Army Dtn Rochambeau'. Rochambeau was appointed governor-general of Saint-Domingue (Haiti) and served in that capacity from January-July, 1796, before being dismissed and replaced by colonial administrator Leger-Felicite Sonthonax. He accompanied Napoleon during the Italian Campaign and the returned to Haiti in 1802 as part of Leclerc's expedition to reconquer his former colony. Central fold and light edge wear, overall very good.
